To maintain the effectiveness of high-quality medications, they must be packaged in a way that protects them from environmental factors like moisture and oxygen. This ensures that the active ingredients remain potent until consumed. In the pharmaceutical industry, blister packaging is commonly used for this purpose. These packages include a molded plastic sheet with individual cavities for each tablet, sealed with a push-through aluminium foil known as blister or lid film. This type of packaging keeps tablets and capsules hygienic and securely protected.
Sealing Technique
A heat-sealing lacquer is applied to the aluminium foil to bind it to the plastic tray. Once the tablets are placed in the tray’s cavities, the foil is sealed under precise heat, time, and pressure. Afterwards, a primer and the heat-seal lacquer coat the inside surface to ensure a strong bond and provide areas for branding or regulatory printing.

Hard Aluminium Foil
- Common in Europe at around 25 µm thickness.
- Breaks easily by pressing, making tablets easy to access.
- Can be printed externally; the inside is coated with primer and lacquer (the primer may be colored for marketing, covered by the lacquer to prevent contact with the medication).
Soft Aluminium Foil
- More stretchable and requires greater force to puncture.
- Offers enhanced child-resistant protection and may include perforations to prevent full removal of the foil.
Composite Foils (Aluminium + Paper/PET)
- Laminated films combining aluminium with paper or PET.
- In Europe, used to make blister packs child-resistant.
- In the U.S., these composites are often used as “peel‑off, push‑through” packs: the paper layer must be peeled away before the foil can be punctured. Such systems typically use thicker foil to maintain integrity.
